TOM & DONNA'S WEDDING CELEBRATION

A couple of months ago I was talking to two of my favorite shipmates, about their upcoming wedding and what plans they had made.  Tom and Donna met the first night we sailed from Belfast and I saw the relationship foster and grow, as Donna lived just a few doors down from me. They both fell hard for each other and were quickly inseparable, it was great to witness! They went off the Ship a few months back, to spend time in Italy, and Donna shocked us all, by proposing to Tom on their 6 month anniversary! They were married last month in Colorado, surrounded by a bunch of her friends and 2 couples from our Ship. I asked if they had a special song and they said no and there wasn't going to be any dancing or music at event. But Tom did offer, that he had suggested Footloose but was shot down - they are both so shy and claim to be non dancers. Hence the seed was planted!

I knew a bunch of us would want to celebrate them and their nuptials when they returned to the Ship and we had so much fun with Angie and Gian's flash mob and Ship wedding, that I thought it would be fun to create something similar for Tom & Donna. So I started recruiting from amongst their friends on board and quickly found many who were willing to go out of their comfort zone for these two. I found line dance moves to Footloose very easily, but the problem was the song is sooo fast, none of us could keep up to the beat and get through the 3 minutes. So with some tech support from other friends, we reduced the music down to 80% speed and cut down the length of the song significantly. We held secret dance rehearsals and I recruited Donna's sister too when she returned with them. Here's a look into one of our practice sessions.

And here's 2 different views on how it came out on the actual day we did the surprise.

I told Tom & Donna when they came back to ship after wedding, that Bosco and I wanted to meet them for drinks in Morning Light Bar area and then we could go to Thistle Dining Room Saturday night and hear all about their wedding and adventures. Instead we ambushed them with flash mob and group dinner with 20 of us, plus the rest of the Ship friends and staff joining in. A special evening evolved and I know they were really touched by the outpouring of love and good wishes!

We did an encore dance after dinner in the Coral Lounge and Tom and Donna joined in, while our cruise director / DJ egged us on to finish the dance at 100% speed. I take a slight tumble but bounce back up - see if you notice!

We got up at 6:45am to get to National Park Forts Walk trail in the hope of seeing koalas . Prior walkers mark trails with tree branches pointing in the direction of their sighting and we were luck enough to see 3 markers in our first hour of hiking. It is so stinking hot and humid the success we had made it bearable. The koala population on the island started with 20 brought over in 1930, to escape fur hunters. Today, the island boast 800 to 1000, and they are so cute and drowsy. They need 20 hours of sleep a day! The early morning is when they are the most active.

Just off the coast of Townsville, Australia is a special little island (that used to be part of mainland, hundreds of thousands years ago). The island was formed by molten granite that was pushed to the earth's surface with volcanic force.Over time the volcanic overlay weathered away leaving an extraordinary landscape of rounded domes and boulders, many as big as a house and spectcularly perched. Over Seventy Percent of the center of the Island is a National Park. There is lots of wildlife here too - koalas, rock wallabies, snakes & birds.

This is my third time in CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA and I really enjoy how walkable, clean and charming it is. The waterfront esplanade and lagoon area is a nice walk day or night. We had 2 nights here in the waterfront Shangri La Marina Hotel while waiting for the Ship to arrive and then 2 additional days in Port.
