I have wanted to try the Dining in the Dark experience for years! Bosco had done once before back in San Francisco, but was game to do again. I was so excited when I found the listing in the Seeking Sophie website, looking for unique experiences in Singapore.

Here's how it worked: You Surrender Your Sight, and allow a Blind waiter to be your guide.

When we arrived at NOX - Dine in the Dark, we were welcomed into the lounge above and were given the introduction and instructions for the experience. We were served an Amuse-bouche to awaken our palates, giving us a glimpse of the mystery dining experience about to unfold. Then we were lead upstairs by walking in a train fashion holding on to the waiter and each others shoulders. At the top of the stairs we entered a pitch black room, to get acclimated and then went thru blackout curtains, into the dining room, where we were placed at our tables dining chairs, and so it begins. Our waiter Peter introduced himself and told us he has been blind for the last 9 years. He explained that in front of each us was a coaster and our water glass on the right, just above our napkin and fork and spoon. On the left was placed our signature cocktail we got with each of the 3 sections of the menu - appetizers, mains and dessert. Each section contained 4 distinct dishes, where no one ingredient would be repeated. The four dishes were served in bowls arranged on a platter, with the first one at a clock's 6 position, then 9, 12  and 3. It was recommended we eat in a clockwise progression.

Bosco and I tried to identify each of the ingredients and tastes at the same time. It was hard, I thought smell would help more but the texture of the food was more distint then smell. We cleansed our palate often with water, but were lucky if we got one or two of the ingredients in each dish pinpointed. Some of the first bites were so yummy, the others were good but puzzling. Peter offered advise, some clues and monitored us often. Before the dessert courses, the whole room sang happy birthday to the 6 participants who were there commemorating their special day. The dining room accommodated about 50 people at each sitting but spacing was such we could talk comfortably.  After about ahour and a half we finished eating and were brought back to the entry lounge by Peter. It took a couple of minutes to get used to the lights again.

Next they asked us to fill out surveys commenting on each course and what our guess of ingredients were. Then another waiter came over with an I pad and asked about our experience and showed us images of each of the dishes we actually ate and the three cocktails. Sadly I can't show images of any of the yummy food, as they need to keep the menu a mystery for future diners!

I would highly recommend all to try a dine in the dark experience! If your in Singapore, PLEASE support NOX - Dining in the Dark and the great work they are doing for the blind community there! There are sooo many restaurants and food venue choices in Singapore, I would hate to see them have to close because of lack of patronage.
