SALVADOR, BRAZIL - Day 2

Here's a couple more shots from yesterday, strolling thru the town. Turns out the signage letters are not anchored down and when I put my legs up on the "V" I almost started a dominos collapse. OOPSIE!

Day 2, in Salvador 3/13/25, we wanted a nice boat ride to a couple beaches, with time to relax in the sunshine. Holly Hennessy ( of Captain the Cruising Kitty fame) had put together a small boat excursion. I had made plans to spend the day, with Bosco, at a beach and then convinced him the boat with others, would be fun way to do it, as long as he could handle all the ladies! He agreed - so Callie, Holly, Deborah, Cherie & Diana joined us. We have had great luck to date, with our port excursions. We have to create them on our own, the ship has a very limited number of options available, based on our small size. Well our luck ran out today! Our boat captain showed up late, with no ice in his cooler, hardly any gas and spoke NO English. The travel agent, Holly arranged through the port, meet us, to get payment and introduce us to boat captainr. We got the agent to tell the captain we didn't want to do 4 beaches he suggested - just the 2 best - so we would have time to relax, swim and snorkel. The captain stopped for ice and tried taking us to two beaches that we could have walked or cabbed to!  Neither had boat access.  We tried negotiating using translator,  for over an hour and then finally just told him to return us to the pier and cancel trip. We would dispute charges on the Credit card. Here's the limited scenery we saw from the boat and our happy gang when we first set off.

When we got back to the dock Bosco, Callie and I took an uber to the beach where the boat had just tried to take us with no access. We ended up running into Memo, another resident buddy there and had a great afternoon! The beach had everything you needed, umbrellas, chairs, lots of food vendors and artisans selling a whole assortment of wares. The people were super friendly too - we ended up having several conversations with locals and visitors, one family was from NJ. They were so curious about our cruise, the ship and our experiences so far. We barely remember the wasted time of the morning since we had such a great afternoon!  Meet Tamara Tayra  a really nice Brazilian woman, we talked with quite frankly about several observations and questions we had about life in Brazil. Sadly, she was a recent young widow, but appears to be a real go getter and she works for a British owned commercial construction company, doing the HR and Accounting.

Today we went to see the coastal Naidiri Village that has recently won the Top Prize in global restoration, for their ocean reef project. The reef restoration was borne out of necessity to solve their dwindling food/ main protein source for the village, of fish. It was started by 2 of the villages rugby players and today is run by the local teenagers (mostly boys) in the village. It was great seeing how empowered and proud they were of their amazing efforts.

The port agent offered several trips to areas around Lautoka . We chose the trip to Serenity Island Resort which included van and boat transfers and lunch. It was a really nice day enjoying the sun, reef, pool, turtles and amenities!

I organized a group tour for a fun day experience. We had a great day despite the rain that decided to join in. We started with a 45 minute van ride out through the city, into the countryside. Then we got in long boats and went up river to a waterfall, some swam or cheered on the guides to cliff dive. Then back in the boats to visit Sabata Village where 50 family members live as a community existing totally off the land, along the river. Next was a quick boat ride to our BBQ lunch spot. After lunch we got to tube down the river, through light rapids, for just about an hour. We ganged our tubes together with the guide - we had a chain of 14 in my group and the guides totally blew us away singing hymns for a good chunk of the journey. It was truly moving in that place with the rain drizzling and all of us linked together. Loved it!
