We had arranged for a driver to pick us up at the Zhangjaijie National Forest at 2:30pm, so we could have a much needed break for the 2 hour drive to Furong Ancient Town. That way, we could explore Furong at night, which is the best time to see it, have a bit of a rest and still be in a good position, to see more of the Forest, the next day.

Furong Ancient Town is a scenic 2,000 year old historic village in Yongshun County, Hunan Province famous for it's massive 60 m waterfall running directly through it center. The town originally served as a fortress and capital for the local Tusi kings. The architecture is traditional stilted wood that was built high along the cliffs and River You for protection from invaders and floods, using the waterfall as a natural moat.
When evening arrives the town lights up with vibrant laterns and neon lights, creating a magical night scene.
The driver came back for us at 8:30 pm and then drove us another 2 hours to the city of Zhangjiajie to the Hotel California, ( yes I played the Eagle's song as we drove up!) Here we met back up with our luggage and checked in for 2 nights.
