CARTAGENA, COLUMBIA - EASTER SUNDAY 4/20/25

The PORT OF CARTAGENA wins the BEST PORT EXPERIENCE prize so far; they had an aviary just for cruise passengers to enjoy along with the typical shops and cafes. The Birds were free to roam all over, plentiful and active!  Quite the Hello!

Our Sunday Mass group has grown significantly over the last few months and on Easter Sunday we had 14 of us going to 10 am Mass at Cathedral de Santa Catalina de Alejandria in the old city.

A very personable and energetic female guide approached us at the Port and arranged a large van transport for us and then waited while we were in Mass to give us a tour of town afterwards. Her approach and pricing was very reasonable, and 10 of us spent the next 4 hours, with her and her driver. We walked the Old City parts, about 3 hours and drove to the other sights, outside the city walls and then returned to the Port just before 2 pm, to catch the end of Lunch. Below is old City highlights.

Columbia is very proud of their beauty queens and that so many have also captured the title of Miss Universe. Remember when Steve Harvey said the wrong name as winner ? One of the Miss Columbia's held the title for 8 minutes until revoked!

Their faces are commemorated on the sidewalk in the Plaza de Bolivar.

Emeralds are also a big part of Columbia business, so of course we had a presentation at a jeweler / distributor. Emeralds are my birthstone but I held strong and didn't buy any, despite all their efforts and pricing that was almost free!!!

We got up at 6:45am to get to National Park Forts Walk trail in the hope of seeing koalas . Prior walkers mark trails with tree branches pointing in the direction of their sighting and we were luck enough to see 3 markers in our first hour of hiking. It is so stinking hot and humid the success we had made it bearable. The koala population on the island started with 20 brought over in 1930, to escape fur hunters. Today, the island boast 800 to 1000, and they are so cute and drowsy. They need 20 hours of sleep a day! The early morning is when they are the most active.

Just off the coast of Townsville, Australia is a special little island (that used to be part of mainland, hundreds of thousands years ago). The island was formed by molten granite that was pushed to the earth's surface with volcanic force.Over time the volcanic overlay weathered away leaving an extraordinary landscape of rounded domes and boulders, many as big as a house and spectcularly perched. Over Seventy Percent of the center of the Island is a National Park. There is lots of wildlife here too - koalas, rock wallabies, snakes & birds.

This is my third time in CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA and I really enjoy how walkable, clean and charming it is. The waterfront esplanade and lagoon area is a nice walk day or night. We had 2 nights here in the waterfront Shangri La Marina Hotel while waiting for the Ship to arrive and then 2 additional days in Port.
